Salem Witch Trials
Salem. 1692. The events that took place in the town of Salem and nearby towns in Massachusetts will be forever regarded as one of our young nation's most tarnished moments in history. We won't forget. We can't forget.

Since 1999, this site has served to chronicle the events that took place during one of the darkest moments in U.S. history. Witchcraft? Voodoo?

Free speech before the Consitution?

Political agendas?

Personal vendettas?

This website covers plenty. From a scholarly perspective detailing the events that led to what is widely regarded as a judicial travesty to the biographies of the afflicted, the accused and the victims

In Boston, not Salem Massachusetts, in 1692 an accusation was made. A Boston Mason's children were acting up.So being on the cutting edge of seventeenth century intellect ,John Goodwin knew in his heart of hearts, that the only logical explanation was witchcraft. Like minded people were soon to agree.Starting one of the most disturbing episodes in Colonial American history.

Cotton Mather a contemporary of John Goodwin, wrote a book on the subject

was a prolific publisher of pamphlets and a firm believer in witchcraft Witchcraft Witchcraft, in various historical, anthropological, religious and mythological contexts, is the alleged use of supernatural or magical powers. Witchcraft often refers to the alleged use of supernatural or magical powers in order to inflict harm or damage upon members of a community or their property...

Who would have thought that in this day and age, witchcraft.Or accusations of witchcraft would rear it's ugly head in American political discourse. But it has.For Sarah Palin to be in any way, shape, or form, connected to the killing of a Congresswoman, witchcraft most be the only logical reasons for such a statement.A few days in to this no real connection has been made. No proof (tangible evidence) that the killer Jared Loughner, knew of Sarah Palin, knew of a two year old map posted on her website or had ever head her speak a single word.Yet in the minds of many progressives, she along with others are in fact responsible for his actions resulting in the death of a Congresswoman. How could this be explained ...Witchcraft? or the super natural, is the only options left to explain this.

News: sarah palin blood on her hands

  • Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' blood is on Sarah Palin's hands after…

And, now that Palin may have the blood of more than some poor caribou on her hands, I wonder if she will continue putting people in cross hairs and calling on folks to RELOAD!…

The far leftist political beliefs, held by many the MSM today, and parts of the community they preach to,find themselves under great distress. After the last election, fear creeped in to their hearts. America no longer seemed to be heading down the path they have chosen. The modern secular progressives believe that they alone posses the answers in America's time need. They are certain of their superior wisdom. They claim "exclusivity" to the answers. Theirs is the only way to proceed, and they are as sure of their convictions as were the Puritan in their beliefs.Social and economic factors were beyond their very limited intellect. They did not like things that were unexplained. They could not get their little minds around questions, that were not answered in a hallowed book ( the bible in 1692 and the progressive writing of Karl Marx in the present time). Now at this time (1692) they needed a scape goat ( an Irish washerwoman, Mary Glover) to bring their world back to a place that it made sense to them. Logic, reason were not a requirement. The only requirement was an easy answer, that would set things right,to push the world back in to it's proper place. (if you think like they do) If however, you find yourself not thinking as the Puritans did, the line of action perused, leads to madness.Only by having a communal mindset ( a delusional one at that) did any of it, make the least little bit of sense.

The Internet has shrunk the world, making us as connected as if we still lived in a small Town atmosphere. Secretes are difficult, if not impossible to hide.In the age we live in, conservatives are said to be evil, conservative women, should be seen and not heard.

Social context

In accordance with Puritan beliefs, the majority of accused 'witches' were unmarried or recently widowed land-owning women; according to the law if no legal heir existed upon the owner's death, title to the land would revert to the previous owner, or (if no previous owner could be determined) to the colony. This made witch-hunting a possible method of acquiring a profitable piece of property.

or in this case to discredit the political aspirations of a woman who has an agenda that is heretical to the belief of the progressive cause.

is it progressive or regressive, that unfounded accusations are understood as real, and acted upon.

Why do I feel many on the vine, had they lived in Colonial America would find themselves chanting, burn the witch, burn the witch.

Would I like Palin to just stop with the political arena, yes, would I like her to just do whatever non-political entertainment to at least make money, sure why not, I never watched her show. Would it be grand if people would stop giving her so much attention yes. Would it be grand if people left her kids alone, her family alone.

We preach about stopping bullying yet even as adults it is still happening. I don't get it. People actually expect kids to stop bullying when they are learning from adults to not stop?

Palin means very little to me, I pay next to not a damn thing she ever says but I do not even bother going off attacking her with every little thing I can. I do not bother going after her family for not reason. Bristol Palin received death threats while on Dancing with the Stars. WHY!!!????

Every little thing the Palins do is scrutinized to the extreme to make fun of them, to attack them, to cause whatever damage possible. WHY?????!!!!!!

I don't know why the heck people try and stop bullying for teens and younger kids when adults do it ad nauseum.

No one wants to listen to each other anymore. Everyone wants to throw out their own hate filled, anger filled, obnoxious rhetoric. EVERYONE is throwing out the @!$%#filled rhetoric.

I am so sick of the hypocrisy.

The concept of conflating religious persecution and deaths of innocent girls and women in the Salem Witch Trials with the alleged persecution by progressives (whatever that means) of the loud mouthed, unintelligent and boorish media manipulator money-making machine known as Sarah Palin is a bona fide lackluster s-t-r-e-t-c-h. There is no connection, other than shared biology, which makes the supposition fairly offensive, even at face value. If there are those who consider Sarah Palin a leader of any sort and follow her exhortations, then she is, indeed, responsible for what she says and does, even if it is in a digitally format and even if she is such a coward as not to admit that responsibility.

Very interesting take on this kpr. I have been absolutely ASTOUNDED by the belief that S. Palin is 'responsible' for the shooting.

In this day and age - it does remind one of the witch hunts.

I blame Palin and others like her for lying to promote fear, because of a political agenda.

I do not hold her responsible anymore than anyone else. The shooter is insane.

Now, that being said, what is being helped by the current hate-filled civil discourse?

The Witchhunt/Palin parallel is not an accurate analogy. I don't recall any of the "witches" posting targets of Christians on their websites. She CHOSE to be provocative, and now she can suffer the consequences.

None of the "witches" called for the overthrow of Cotton Mather.

Good point sis!! But upon further investigation, I have found out for a FACT. Sally is indeed, Charlie Brown's sister. Not Snoppy's sister as Sally-Snoopy's sister claims!!!!

I present to you, EXHIBIT A!!!!!!!!

    According to WiKipedia.......

    History

Sally was born on May 26, 1959, with Charlie Brown receiving a telephone call from the hospital and dashing out of the house yelling in joy that he had a new baby sister (Linus and Lucy happened to be standing nearby and saw him run out, causing Linus to remark to Lucy, "You didn't act like that when I was born."). She was given the name "Sally" a week later, on June 2. Although much talked about, and the cause for a celebration that included Charlie Brown passing out chocolate cigars, it was not until August 23, 1959, that she finally made her first appearance. As a baby Sally liked playing with empty baby bottles, which she used for everything from building blocks to bowling pins, and being taken out for walks. The latter caused poor Charlie Brown no small amount of frustration when he had to miss an important baseball game to walk her around the neighborhood in her stroller. He ended up leaving her to return to the game due to the pleading of his team, and, in typical Charlie Brown fashion, quickly lost the game, incurring the wrath of both his mother and his teammates.

Therefore, my case still stands!!!! lol

Mther have you been puttin the big britches on us? OMGoodness that is not you?????

I speak for those of us who have known you 4-ever ......we are so disappointed that you are...well not really you? I insist that you take all the images of yourself down on your pages on other viewable websites, including those of you with your family and friends! I am horrified that so many of us who know you have been duped for such a long period of time. Why would you spend an entire lifetime impersonating someone that you are not? I am sickened to think of how your family, children and husband will react when they are informed of this!

I would love paddle your bottom =) for this lifelong charade you have carried on! I am sooo disappointed in you mther...

Just for everyone's information I have called the mental hospital, you clearly need help!

The men in the white coats are coming! Someone hold Sally's hand ;) while we wait for the ambulance so she can tell her side of this fabricated uhhh... I mean, her impersonation accusation!

See. Now that raises a VERY IMPORTANT point that you right-wingers are almost invariably UTTERLY STUPID about.

"This" is not a witch hunt and I'm not infringing your free speech. You have the right to say "this is a witch hunt" despite the fact that that's an idiotic thing to say, and the fact that I say I think that's an idiotic thing to say is no infringement of your free speech, it's an exercise of my free speech.

Similarly, Sarah Palin is free to spout all the vile, ignorant hateful rhetoric she wants. And others are free to condemn her for spouting vile, ignorant, hateful rhetoric.

I could give a @!$%# about her feelings (LOL) so, I'm not one of them

what does in fact concern me, is this troubling little fact, and it does seem to be an indisputable fact

.A few days in to this no real connection has been made. No proof (tangible evidence) that the killer Jared Loughner, knew of Sarah Palin, knew of a two year old map posted on her website or had ever head her speak a single word.

    care to refute that ?

Yet in the minds of many progressives, she along with others are in fact responsible for his actions resulting in the death of a Congresswoman. How could this be explained ...Witchcraft? or the super natural, is the only options left to explain this.

it's runaway insanity.it's irrational, there is no logic, or reason present, in said accusations.

"Right wingers", as you put it have no monopoly on murderous and/or bizarre behavior. Just recently we've had Amy Bishop, the woman who shot the people in Alabama, Joe Stack (the guy who flew his plane into the IRS building) That wacko who took hostages at the Discovery Channel building, and the guy who tried to shoot up the city council in Florida. The difference is that no one on the right tried to blame the left/Democrats and their harsh rhetoric for any of it. Wackos come in all flavors.

That's a non sequiter. No one that I know of has said the two are equivalent. The attempted opportunism on the left that we've seen the past few days is in fact despicable. Read the article above.

Even if everything else you said were true, SO WHAT? Some people said some nasty things about Sarah Palin. Who gives a @!$%#ing @!$%#?

There's about fifty different ways Sarah Palin and/or her supporters on the right could have responded to events and they picked the one way that was most whiney and self-absorbed, not to mention pathetically dishonest in the case of the "surveyor's point" excuse.

She could've acted like Joe Machin who, when asked about his famous gun ad said something like, "Well, it didn't seem wrong at the time, but in light of events I don't think I'd do it again."

She could've said, "The claim is unworthy of the dignity of a response," which would've had, you know, dignity.

She could even have been a little contemplative and self-critical and said something like, "Well, it was merely standard campaign rhetoric but after this happened I just felt awful about the bullseyes."

    You know, normal human decency.

Instead we get another @!$%#ing angry screed about poor Li'l Sarah and the mean old liberals as if all of American politics is just the ensemble cast around the Star Sarah Palin.

It seems to me your ire is misplaced. Perhaps you should instead direct it at those who dragged Palin into this in the first place, instead of those who seek to defend her against the scurrilous charge that she is somehow responsible for something she very obviously had nothing whatever to do with.

Bob Beckel recently claimed to have invented the idea of "targeting" districts and/or candidates for defeat. Is he also in some way responsible? It's ridiculous on it's very face and anyone with a scintilla of common sense would know that intuitively.

That would be difficult since Giffords herself is one of them and I'm another.

How did Giffords drag Palin into this while un- or semiconscious, pray tell? And while I'm sure you're always ready to blame Palin for anything negative under the sun, your profile just isn't of the stature necessary to make any difference one way or the other. No offense.

it's been standard usage in British general elections for fifty years at least.

    So they're to blame, too?

None taken. Frankly, none of them have a high-enough profile. Know who tbogg is? Ever read Wolcott? What occurred was something like a critical mass of commentary combined with striking visuals, that remarkable clip I just linked and one particular NYDailyNews column.

Furthermore, you'll note a couple or three comments above where I begin a passage "Even if everything else you said were true ...." My argument doesn't depend on who was right or wrong about why this event occurred or who is justified or unjustified in attributing or deflecting culpability. It's about her choice of posture to adopt in response.

One wonders if she had a problem with the Dems for using very similar iconography. And I seriously doubt she would try to confer blame for the shooting on the use of standard map symbology, i.e., surveyor's marks.

It's about her choice of posture to adopt in response.

I don't know, I heard the audio portion of the entire 8 minute video and I thought her response was fairly upbeat and didn't seek to play the victim at all.

One should always try to separate her response from those of her defenders, who may at times be a little over the top.

She doesn't "play" the victim, she IS a victim (and so is anyone else they tried to pin the acts of a madman on) and anyone who doesn't see that needs some perceptual adjustment, to say the least.

" something's gone a rye" a phrase used to explain unusual events, un-normal, confusion, acting up. in 1692, thier rye/grain rotted, turned moldy, and became ergot. That's used in l.s.d. The reason those people were acting up, confused, unusual is because they were "tripping". Then accused of whichcraft. " something's gone a rye" now, with this modern whichhunt. only this time YOU people are tripping

Don't worry about a Palin being the subject of a witch hunt...she's got a real witch hunter on her side.

Pastor Thomas Muthee got his start in Kenya. He got his start NOT by worshiping witches and demons but by DRIVING THEM AND THEIR WITCHCRAFT AWAY. Specifically, he said a woman in Kiambu, Kenya was a witch, riled up a mob, the police broke into her house and fired guns and took her to jail, and after they released her she ran for her life. That was his start of his campaign against women (and some men) that he calls witches. So don’t call him a witch doctor — call him a witch hunter! Remember: Sarah is to MOOSE as Muthee is to WITCHES. They hunt them. Except I think Muthee gets mobs to kill the people he calls witches, so his own hands aren’t dirtied.

Let's see according to your post Democrats are either witches or MOOSE. I prefer the later. As far as your concerned the Bishop chased out a witch. Well ccc it didn't happen. The Bishop uses local superstitions to enhance his supposed power over witches and to get more converts. Now your assertion that Palin uses others to do her killing is just plain idiotic.

Was a little humor actually. "your assertion that Palin uses others to do her killing is just plain idiotic." Don't see that there, feeling a little sensitive these days?...though I did see someone load her gun for her before she shot that moose. Anyway, since the witch hunters of the Salem days and previous were superstitious religious zealots, the analogy in the article might easily be turned around.

It's a blaming disease and the US has it. Of course Palin has nothing to do with this. I think people are simply afraid someone as ignorant as Palin could actually become our president and are desperate to get her out of the running, so will use whatever they can to do that. I don't understand why the republicans don't find an intelligent candidate???? Condoleesa Rice comes to mind, she's politically saavy, intelligent, and she even knows there's a huge difference between North and South Korea. Not only that, she knows that Africa is a continent. Why the republican's choose to back someone with basically no geographical or international knowledge is beyond me, which is why I can't take them seriously.

I do understand the deep desire to get Palin out of the way as a presidential candidate, because she would make the entire US look like idiots. I think the facts of her own ignorance should do that all by itself, and don't condone blaming her for some psycho's killing rampage.

Now at this time (1692) they needed a scape goat ( an Irish washerwoman, Mary Glover) to bring their world back to a place that it made sense to them. Logic, reason were not a requirement.'

What have we learned? Not much. We still buy into the same extreme dogma whereby a narrow definition of right and wrong with respect to religion (or patriotism) leads to violence against the "sinners" (or the "traitors"). Who are todays's sinners and traitors? That would be anyone the extremists don't approve of: blacks, jews, gays, (pick a group). Sarah is not a victim though, she is much more akin to the accusers.

Sally you seem a little rusty on Vine etiquette. You write an entire article trashing the Vine and another Viner with false accusations, and now you make accusations in this article that "someone" is being maliciously harrassed and the that article is "inaccurate". When you post such a statement as you have, you had better have proof of your accusation, you should be the one suspended and removed for your liable comments. As far as the other Viners, they have a right to defend themselves, their is nothing malicious in defending another or being witness to an innocent party. This is absolutely sickening and absurd to me. Your friend as you describe, as being so brilliantly smart, doesn't sound like she has much common sense. Just an observation from your own words.

Oh, sorry Braveheart, my bad, I overlooked that memo that around here one doesn't have to prove anything, the other person has to DISprove it.

          Sorry about that..................

Correct...I learned that, 2 years ago from a couple of friendly Progressives, who routinely ask for positive evidence of a negative, and often required proof of a personal opinion. Dosen't that just drive you nutz?

kpr I do find the connection that you are making between witch hunts and Palin a bit of a stretch, though not as big as some. I do believe that some of your motivation for posting on this topic was founded in a need to strike out and jump in somebody's @!$%#.

To subject others to defamation and humiliation on your site is just dead wrong. Is mtherof3 a friend of yours? Is that what you do to friends.

Were you trolling for just anybody, or was sally your target? No doubt she is on the list of those who are slowly being driven out of the Vine and deserves to be. Is it your intention to be on that same list?

What are you talking about? KPR didn't have anything to do with Sally's comments towards me. How is sally a target here?

Witch hunt and Palin? One is real and the other imaginary. I don't hate Palin nor dose she deserve the kind of press that she keeps getting. She has and will continue to say things she really should not say but that is just Palin. I know some people like her and sometime it is hard not to say shut the H*@& up but that would be mean.

So she sometimes says things she shouldn't say, is that just cause for the extreme hatred and vitriol levied against her by the vast majority of liberals here on Newsvine? EVERY DAY another Palin Bashing article shows up here and WHY? Explain to me this extremely pathetic obsession with bashing the woman at every turn.

It shows the true character of the posters. It has become rather Pathetic and childish.

I've called it the 'shiny objects' theory. Just pay attention to the shiny objects in my right hand so you won't pay attention to what my left hand is doing. Classic mis-direction.

Truthseekerin - Good point my friend. Every time I have been booted off a thread, has been to that very point. Defending the Governor. Palin bashing is an art form among our proglib friends. You try to explain that it is a useless circle jerk, and yet they continue, day after day after day. As if there is NOTHING important going on in the world, outside of Sarahs dumpster. Very pathetic.

Yes it is Braveheart, and it's not only an art form the liberals have mastered, it's also a clear display of the hypocrisy that is so prevalent on this and other websites. I've seen posts aplenty collapsed because someone says something that is non-supportive of Obama and yet they feel it's perfectly fine to burn Governor Palin in effigy at every turn of the page. They've even gone so far as to call Palin a Quitter when the truth of the matter is is that Obama quit FIRST and even lied about it on national television in an interview with the late Tim Russert some 3 or 4 years ago.

          Unbelievable.

And if any of you need clarification and/or edification as regards the symbols used on the map Palin published, try this little gem.

Question: Is it possible that many dislike Sarah because of her behavior? I only had to listen to her a couple times and that was more than enough for me.
